We came at around mid-morning and we were treated to a full arcing rainbow appearing right in front of the base of the falls. Rainbows and Moonbows at Cumberland Falls Cumberland Falls with a double rainbow in its mist near the bottom of the waterfall along the east bank of the Cumberland River While we came here in Autumn for the colors (though the volume of the falls might be on the average to low side), it’s conceivable that the waterfall can expand when it’s in high volume (I’m guessing in the Spring).Īnother thing going for Cumberland Falls was the consistent display of rainbows. I’m pretty confident that the Cumberland River also flows year-round so this waterfall puts on a show all year long. We could argue that it was because of the explosion of color that surrounded the falls that it could even be more photogenic than the famous Niagara itself, especially when you consider Cumberland Falls’ naturesque surroundings (as opposed to Niagara Falls’ high rises). Cumberland Falls as seen from the Eagle Falls Trail However, after having come to Cumberland Falls and seeing for ourselves what this place was all about, we think this waterfall has got other things going for it as well.įor starters, as you can see in the photo above, we happened to show up at the apparent peak of Autumn colors this side of the Cumberland Plateau and the Daniel Boone National Forest. Sure it’s a much smaller version of Niagara Falls given that it’s said to be 68ft tall and typically 125ft wide. With a classical rectangular shape that bears a strong resemblance to the Horseshoe Falls section of Niagara Falls, it’s not at all surprising that this waterfall has also been referred to as the Niagara of the South, Little Niagara, or even the Great Falls. In fact, it even cracked our Top 10 list of the Best Waterfalls in the USA! Cumberland Falls and the surrounding Autumn foliage In ended up working out because the Gatlinburg horseback riding was something like $80 a person! I can't say for sure but I'm willing to bet this $20 ride was better than the $80 ride.Cumberland Falls definitely has to be up there when it comes to our favorite waterfalls of the South. This horseback ride was extra special because we had to cancel our horseback ride in Gatlinburg Tennessee a few days before due to bad weather. But everyone thought it was funny and it was the joke of the ride. He kept stopping along the trail to grab a quick snack, eating leaves off of tree branches and leaves that had fallen on the trail. Except our 8 year old daughter was on a juvenile horse that hadn't quite finished his training. The horses are use to the ride you don't have to guide them at all. The horses were all well behaved and it seemed like they were well cared for. You go up and down several mountains and other than crossing a couple of roads you stay away from any signs of civilization and you feel like you are out in the middle of nowhere. He added our family of 3 to the ride no problem and we were pleasantly surprised by the cost of only $20 per person! The guide was very helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. The guy working was in the middle of getting another family on horses and they were just about to leave for a ride. Driving in we noticed there was horseback riding in the park.Īfter visiting the falls we stopped at the horses to inquire about riding. We were traveling from Tennessee to Michigan and made a quick pitstop at Cumberland Falls. And we also had two great dinners, catfish and ribs! The food is buffet style, but the chef is a master and the food was delicious! The view of the river out the restaurant's windows are a bonus, as is the view from the veranda behind the lodge. The trails were spectacular, winding through the woods with the trees in full color! The price was very reasonable too.Īte breakfast in the lodge a couple times which is included in your stay. The wranglers were very knowledgeable and chose horses according to your ability. We were very impressed with how clean the paddocks were and how well kept the horse are. We were there during the full moon and were lucky enough to see the "moon bow" during two separate nights. Of course the waterfalls were the big draw. There was plenty to do at this resort, miles of hiking trails running along the river under beautiful limestone cliffs. The cabin was completely furnished with comfortable beds and a full kitchen including all cooking utensils, appliances and even an ice maker in the refrigerator! We also had a working stone fireplace! There was a porch out front with two comfortable chairs in which we spent many hours reading or enjoying a cocktail! ![]() What a beautiful resort! We stayed for one week in October in one of the old CCC cabins. ![]()
